Periplast, a company of the Poço Group, from Leiria, has developed an innovative piece of equipment that allows its clients to reuse non-recyclable plastics. The technology has been a success, especially abroad, where old synthetic turf, surgical masks, and other plastic mixtures are transformed into stable dividers, urban furniture, among many other possibilities.

Carlos Poço, CEO of the Poço Group, and Daniel Sousa, commercial director of Periplast, explain to JL that this equipment was designed to solve the problem of mixed plastics. "Most plastics are recyclable, but if we mix different types, and they have contaminants, recycling is no longer possible," introduces Carlos Poço.

Until now, these plastics were either "sent to landfills, which is a bad destination, or used as fuel, with the downside of producing CO2," he continues. "Through this solution, we are giving these products another life," says the group’s CEO.

"Urban furniture, beams, or vineyard posts have existed for a long time, but we created a machine that uses mixed plastics instead of virgin raw material," he highlights.

"Our manufacturing process is extrusion. We created a carousel that produces 4-meter pieces, which cool down during the process of filling other molds," explains the entrepreneur.

The prototype started operating last year. This year, the technology was showcased at the NPE fair in Orlando, USA. The machine costs around 400 thousand euros and has been successful in the international market. Currently, Periplast is building its seventh machine, according to Daniel Sousa.

When Carlos Poço acquired it in 2013, Periplast, which was a pioneer in plastic extrusion, was on the verge of closing. Over the past decade, Periplast adopted a strategy of focusing on fewer products but more innovative items, achieving financial stability.

It currently has about 30 employees (many resources are shared with the Poço Group), exports more than half of its production, especially to the United Kingdom, and recorded a turnover of 4.3 million euros in 2023, surpassing the previous year. "We are now in a position to grow," note the executives.
